Inclusive delegation from Pakistan likely to join World Social Forum in Nepal
An inclusive delegation from Pakistan will join the World Social Forum in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu in 2024, as the crucial meeting of the civil society organizations offers a self-conscious effort to develop what the organizers and participants believe ‘an alternative future’ through championing of the ‘counter-hegemonic globalization.’
The organizers opted to define the World Social Forum as an open space – plural, diverse, non-governmental and non-partisan – where participants, organizations and movements try to engage in concrete actions towards a more solidarity, democratic and fair world. They also try to focus on decentralized debate, proposals building, exchange of experiences and alliances.
‘Punjab Social Forum to work for peace, peaceful coexistence, democracy, freedom for all, and rights’
In Lahore, prominent people from civil society, lawyers, farmers, laborers, workers, academia, doctors, and media jointly announced setting up of the Punjab Social Forum to make sure arrangements to participate in the upcoming World Social Forum that will be held next year in Nepal.
Addressing at the Center for Peace and Secular Studies, Punjab Social Forum coordinator Advocate Liaquat Ali also announced a six-member working body. Besides Advocate Liaquat Ali, Saeeda Diep, Dawood Zafar, Noshi Butt, Idrees Tabassum, and Sher Ali Khalti were named as prominent members of the newly-set up forum.
The coordinator said that all members of the Punjab Social Forum will jointly work for the promotion of peace, peaceful coexistence, democracy, freedom for all, and rights for all communities without any prejudice. He said that the six-member body will meet weekly and will arrange meetings with different stakeholders before the start of the World Social Forum.
‘Interactions at Nepal event will prove as invaluable to all participants and organizations’
“We will focus on younger generation to participate in all social gatherings and focus on global events like the World Social Forum,” the participants said, and also suggested that the Punjab Social Forum must coordinate and consult with student organizations as well. “Our younger generation must participate in all social forums where they can share their problems and suggestions,” they said.
During the World Social Forum, a lot of events will take place with usual passion, dedication, being informative and with healthy interaction, said Saeeda Diep, who heads the Center for Peace and Secular Studies as Executive director. “I believe that interactions at the upcoming event will prove as invaluable to all the participants and organizations as sources of inspiration for daily struggles,” she said.
Just like the World Economic Forum, “the World Social Forum is a key global gathering of those who matter as the social is more important than the economic,” the participants said while sharing the ideas. “This global forum has a space – an open space – to show that we can have an alternative,” they said. It is pertinent to mention here that the United Nations – through UNESCO – has had a presence at the World Social Forum since 2001.
