Misson:The Independent Commission for Human Rights in North Africa (CIDH AFRICA) is an independent, non-governmental organization that works to promote and protect human rights in North Africa. The Commission was founded in 2011 in the wake of the Arab Spring, and it has since become a leading voice on human rights in the region. CIDH AFRICA's work on peace and security in Africa is focused on a number of key areas, including: • Documenting and reporting on human rights abuses. CIDH AFRICA produces regular reports on the human rights situation in North Africa, highlighting specific abuses and making recommendations to governments and the international community. This work helps to raise awareness of human rights abuses and to hold governments accountable. • Advocating for human rights reforms. CIDH AFRICA advocates for reforms to laws and policies that violate human rights. The Commission also works to strengthen institutions such as the judiciary and the police, which are essential for protecting human rights. • Supporting human rights defenders. CIDH AFRICA provides support to human rights defenders in North Africa, who often face threats and harassment for their work. The Commission provides legal and financial assistance, as well as training and capacity-building. CIDH AFRICA's work on peace and security in Africa is important for a number of reasons. First, human rights abuses are often a root cause of conflict and instability. When people feel that their rights are being violated, they are more likely to resort to violence. Second, good governance and respect for human rights are essential for building sustainable peace. Third, the promotion and protection of human rights is a moral imperative. CIDH AFRICA's work has helped to make a real difference in the lives of people in North Africa. The Commission's documentation and reporting on human rights abuses has helped to raise awareness of the problem and to hold governments accountable. Its advocacy for human rights reforms has led to changes in laws and policies. And its support for human rights defenders has helped them to continue their important work. Here are some specific examples of CIDH AFRICA's work on peace and security in Africa: • In 2019, CIDH AFRICA published a report on the human rights situation in Libya, which documented the widespread use of torture, arbitrary detention, and extrajudicial killings by all sides in the conflict. The report also made recommendations to the Libyan government and the international community on how to protect human rights and build sustainable peace. • In 2020, CIDH AFRICA launched a campaign to advocate for the release of all political prisoners in Egypt. The campaign highlighted the cases of hundreds of prisoners who had been detained arbitrarily and without charge, and it called on the Egyptian government to release them immediately. • In 2021, CIDH AFRICA provided training to human rights defenders in Morocco on how to use social media to document and report on human rights abuses. The training was aimed at helping human rights defenders to reach a wider audience and to have a greater impact on their work. CIDH AFRICA's work on peace and security in Africa is essential for building a more just and peaceful region. The Commission's documentation and reporting on human rights abuses, its advocacy for human rights reforms, and its support for human rights defenders all play a vital role in promoting peace and security. The Network of The Independent Commission for Human rights in Northern Africa is a member of the steering committee of the NGO Forum and a member of the support group to the African Commission on Human and people's Rights ACHPR.
