Agroecology: Transformative Approach to Food and Nutrition

The Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2023's score for the world is 18.3 (considerate moderate)which is only less than one point below the 2015 world's  GHI score of 19.1. Since 2017, the prevalence of undernourishment has been on the rise with the number of undernourished people reaching 735 million from 572 million. Even though Nepal ranks 69th in the GHI, an improvement in the index, the prevalence of food insecurity in Nepal is chronic. The agricultural strategy and approach adopted by the Nepal Government to enhance agricultural practices and production deviate from agroecological principles in certain aspects emphasizing the use of chemical inputs, monoculture and favoring large-scale industrialized farmers and companies’ over small-scale, family farming it runs counter to the holistic and sustainable principles of agroecology. Agroecology emphasizes diverse farming systems that promote biodiversity by incorporating a variety of crops and fostering natural habitats, it helps maintain a balanced ecosystem, preserving plant and animal diversity critical for resilient and sustainable agriculture. It prioritizes ecological harmony, reducing reliance on synthetic inputs such as pesticides and fertilizers. This approach minimizes environmental degradation, soil erosion, and water pollution, promoting long-term sustainability and health of ecosystems and are more resilient in the face of climate change. It also encourages the cultivation of a diverse range of crops, enhancing the nutritional quality of diets. This approach contributes to food security by ensuring a variety of nutritious indigenous foods are available locally. Against this backdrop, the session serves as a critical platform to address the challenges posed by conventional agricultural practices and advocate for more inclusive and ecologically sound approaches, aligning with the principles of agroecology.. The case presentation on success agroecology will be presented by farmer as well.
