The aim of this workshop is to compare our views on the role of education and our concrete practices. As an international movement fighting against poverty, we propose this workshop to discuss, from an international perspective, the transformative power of education and the social change it can bring about.
Why is investing in equitable, quality education crucial to combating economic, social and gender inequalities? In the specific case of certain countries, education is also a central tool in the fight against the highly discriminatory caste system. Under what conditions can education empower individuals, enable them to develop and awaken their consciences? What are the limits encountered by civil society organizations working on education?
How can we achieve an education that takes into account the specific situations of people who suffer from gender, class and/or caste discrimination, so as not to exclude them in the first instance, but rather to contribute to building critical mindsets/"citizen-liberator-popular" education to give them the means to fight against the systems that enable the discrimination they suffer?
We invite you to this workshop to share successful initiatives and concrete examples of educational programs that have made it possible to work on one of these injustices, but also to question the political role of education. What kind of education should we be defending today, and for what objectives?
The question of education is intimately linked to that of democracy. When education is seen as a means of equipping individuals with critical thinking and an understanding of global issues, it encourages civic participation and the expression of opinions. The practice of education is therefore a political exercise, essential to democracy. It will also be interesting to examine this aspect in the light of the rise of authoritarian governments and the global retreat of democracy.
