The issue of migration stands at the crossroads of the world's challenges: glaring social inequalities, widening gaps between rich and poor countries, implementation by some countries and exportation to others of security policies with disastrous effects resulting in thousands of deaths in total indifference. Additionally, we must consider the impacts of climate change that we are beginning to feel palpably and strongly.
In the face of these challenges, at both the local and global levels, social dynamics have emerged to defend the rights of migrants, demanding full transparency regarding the multiple consequences of migration policies. This includes the loss of human lives and exclusionary policies implemented by wealthy countries. These same countries attempt to externalize the management of their borders in transit and emigration countries.
Since the early World Social Forums, the social dynamics within the Maghreb Social Forum have actively engaged in the struggles for the rights of migrants in the Maghreb and the Mediterranean region.
Since 2010, we have organized several social forums focusing on various aspects related to migration in our Maghreb region. The most recent took place in Nador on June 23-25, 2023. The choice of this location and dates was linked to the tragic events and particularly cruel, inhumane, and degrading treatment suffered by migrants on June 24, 2022, at the Barrio Chino border crossing between Nador and Melilla (one of the two land border crossings between the Maghreb/Africa and Europe).
In the preparation phase for the World Social Forum to be held in Katmandu (Nepal) from February 15 to 19, 2024, Maghreb dynamics call on other dynamics from Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, and Asia to prepare several activities for international exchange and coordination on various aspects of migration. The WSF is a space aimed at fostering convergence of social dynamics internationally, strengthening common actions against inequalities and injustices globally, and working together for another possible world.
As a proposal, we can organize the co-facilitation of four/two separate workshops on the following two themes:
1. Climate Change and Internal Migrations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America: Cross-cutting perspectives between situations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
2. Wall Policies, Externalization of Borders, and Migration and Human Rights: Comparing US and EU Policies - Convergences in Struggles.
