Square of statement- People's Climate Justice Assembly

Movements, groups, struggles, community leaders, organizations and individuals from across the globe came together in the People's Climate Justice Assembly - with the aim to unite diverse voices and struggles to strengthen our climate justice fight and put the needs, aspirations and grounded knowledge systems of poor & working-class people and directly nature dependent communities at the center.

Over the last 200 years, the extractive industrial capitalism and ‘nature ignoring Socialism’ together has brought several earth systems on the brink of collapse. The living earth has been exploited with a narrow and ugly profit extraction philosophy of ceaseless economic growth on a limited planet. As shown by latest studies, six of the nine “Planetary Boundaries” have either been breached or on the brink of being broken.

We the People who connect with nature as an integral part of the entirety, take upon ourselves the roles and responsibilities of - not only resisting this earth-destroying juggernaut of industrial extractive capitalism, but also to create and develop a grand narrative of nature respecting, all-liferights based society based of equity, justice, sustainability centered shared future.

We call for:

● Recognize and celebrate the victories, struggles and resistance of the frontline communities, movements in putting people's and communities' well-being and cultures at the core of our climate justice fight.

● Climate finance as a reparation for adaptation and loss and damage

● Engage and empower on the urgency of climate justice and the disproportionate impacts that Profit- and growth-oriented systems of extraction, production, distribution and consumption driven and Global North driven solutions have on vulnerable communities.

● Expose the fallacy of private sector led, Global North driven climate false-solutions in the agriculture, energy sector which are further fueling inequality and adding to the climate crisis.

● Address the root cause of the crisis and share about the people led real solutions from the ground

● Demand for climate justice, emphasizing the importance of equity, fair share, historic responsibility, human rights, right to development especially for those least responsible for causing climate change.

● Reject world bank and International financial institutions and private institutions role in climate finance

● Transform energy systems away from corporate-controlled fossil fuels and other harmful sources such as nuclear, mega-hydro, and biofuels to a clean, safe system that empowers people and communities.

● We resist the false solutions like Carbon offset projects & carbon markets, REDD+,geo engineering, critical transitional materials, Nature based Solutions, Big Dams, Climate Smart Agriculture, Carbon Capture & Storage CCS or CCUS, capitalist centralized mode of renewable projects and the false narratives of Net Zero Targets. We demand real, peopleled solutions that will protect the planet and communities — not false climate solutions that sacrifice frontline communities for the greed of few.

● Demand the cancellation of unjust debt for the Global South Countries and, call for national and international tax reform measures to ensure a steady flow of funding for climate action that reaches affected vulnerable and marginalized groups.

● Encourage cooperation, information exchange, and cross-movement learning in order to create policies and transformative climate action that address the systemic obstacles and traps that the Global South has faced for centuries.

● Enhanced collaboration and partnerships among civil society organizations, grassroots movements, farmer organization, trade unions, indigenous communities, women, and climate activists among the continents.
