Conference on: "The Impact of Hate Speech in the Digital Space: Challenges and Solutions"

The world is witnessing an increasing use of digital technology, where digital technologies and social media have become an integral part of our daily lives, providing platforms for interaction and idea exchange. However, the impact of the phenomenon of hate speech on this digital space is clearly evident, affecting individuals and societies directly. Given the worsening phenomenon of hate speech, this workshop also aims to draw attention to the additional challenge of the impact faced by the digital space dedicated to women's movements.

There is a noticeable increase in exposure to harassment and digital threats towards women and women's activities. Therefore, we will focus specifically on understanding this impact and developing innovative strategies to combat the impact of hate speech on women's movements. This will be within the framework of the Global Social Forum to be held in Nepal, where this workshop will be organized to explore and discuss the impact of hate speech in the digital space. We are pleased to bring together experts and enthusiasts to exchange ideas on understanding this impact and developing innovative strategies to confront it.

 

Conference Objectives:

  1. Shed light on the effects of hate speech in the digital space on individuals and communities.
  2. Study the cultural and social factors influencing the spread of hate speech.
  3. Present innovative solutions to combat hate speech and promote dialogue and tolerance.
  4. Encourage collaboration between civil society organizations, social movements, and institutions to improve the digital space environment.

 

Importance of the Conference:

This workshop provides an opportunity to understand the growing phenomenon of hate speech in the digital space and analyze how the international community can effectively combat it. The conference will highlight the need for awareness and digital cooperation to promote tolerance and diversity.

Date: During the events of the Social Forum in Nepal between February 15 and 18, 2024.

Organizers: The Mediterranean  Forum for Youth in Morocco (FOMEJE) / "Bawsala" Citizen Initiatives Association.

Target Participants:

Researchers, activists, government officials, representatives from technology companies, and anyone interested in combating hate speech in the digital space.

Methodology:

The workshop relies on a series of presentations and work sessions to exchange experiences and develop new insights. Participants are also encouraged to submit research papers exploring challenges and potential solutions for dealing with hate speech in the digital space.

 

Application and Participation:

We invite researchers and those interested to submit abstracts of their research and contribute to this important dialogue on the impact of hate speech in the digital space and how to address it.

Statement

  1. We recommend directing the attention of civil society towards raising awareness against hate speech, discrimination, and racism, and promoting an alternative positive discourse. Encourage fostering open dialogue and building bridges of understanding between diverse cultures and communities.
  2. Advocate for organizing awareness events and workshops addressing diversity while respecting human rights.
  3. Encourage civil society to play a vital role in monitoring and documenting cases of hatred and discrimination, and advocating for laws and policies that condemn violence and hatred while promoting respect for different opinions. This contributes to building a more tolerant and unified society.
